Choosing a driveway for your home
Compare block paving, resin bound, tarmac, concrete and gravel with your home, budget and daily use in mind. Think about drainage and ongoing care as well as appearance.
Choose for the way you live
List what the driveway must accommodate before comparing colours. Include vehicle sizes, turning space, visitors, walking routes, bins and access to a charging point if relevant. Consider how easily you want to clean it and whether future access to buried services is likely.
Then review drainage, levels and the available construction depth. These practical constraints can narrow the choice before samples are ordered. Compare complete installation proposals, including preparation and disposal, rather than the price of the visible finish alone.
Block paving and resin bound surfaces
Block paving offers patterns, contrasting borders and the possibility of lifting individual areas for repair. It needs secure edges and maintained joints. Permeable block paving is a specific construction system, not simply standard blocks with a different label.
Resin bound surfacing gives a continuous aggregate finish with a choice of blends. Its suitability depends on the base, drainage and specified system. Ask about repair appearance, cleaning and installation conditions. Resin bonded surfacing is a different finish, so confirm exactly what a quotation describes.
Tarmac, concrete and gravel
Tarmac can provide a straightforward appearance with contrasting edge details. Consider the expected traffic, edge support and how future patches will look. Concrete can be plain or imprinted, with colour and pattern options; its layout and movement details should be planned before installation.
Gravel offers a different texture and can be useful in an appropriate design, but loose material needs containment and occasional attention. Check how it will work for pushchairs, mobility needs and the transition to the pavement. No surface is completely maintenance-free.
Compare samples and quotations fairly
View samples outdoors, both wet and dry, alongside the house brickwork. Ask for examples of similar finishes after use, rather than choosing from a tiny sample alone. A dark surface, contrasting border or busy pattern can look different across a whole frontage.
Your final comparison should include the supporting construction, drainage, access arrangements, expected maintenance and any warranty terms offered in writing. Select the system that meets your priorities over time, not just the one with the lowest initial price or the strongest claim of durability.
