Drainage near doors, garages and house walls
Coordinate outside levels with the building instead of using a channel as an afterthought.
Start at the building edge
A patio or driveway meeting a building needs more than an attractive straight line. Record the door threshold, garage entrance, ventilation openings and other visible building details. Ask how the proposed outside level relates to them. Raising a surface to make a doorway look flush can create problems if the building and drainage detail have not been considered together.
Understand the direction of flow
Measure the intended falls and identify where water will collect. Think about rainfall arriving from the surrounding surface as well as water immediately beside the door. A small channel at a threshold may be only one part of the solution. The layout must explain how water reaches it, how it leaves and what happens if the inlet is obstructed.
Keep building details coordinated
Moisture protection, ventilation and access requirements can interact with the external work. Where the proposed arrangement is uncertain, involve the appropriate designer or building professional. Do not assume that adding a drain automatically makes any raised paving level acceptable. The drain and building detail need to be compatible rather than treated as unrelated items.
Design for the way people move
Threshold arrangements should also work for walking, wheeled access and opening doors. Discuss the needs of the household at the start. A slot or grating should be chosen and positioned for its intended use and remain maintainable. A neat-looking detail that cannot be cleaned without dismantling nearby work may be inconvenient later.
Check the outlet and installation
The collection component needs a suitable connected drainage route and correct installation support. Ask to see how this is coordinated before surrounding paving conceals it. Product-specific details matter at corners, ends and transitions. Carry out the appropriate checks, while recognising that an ordinary water test does not demonstrate performance under every possible rainfall condition.
Observe and maintain
Keep the accessible inlet clear of leaves and debris and follow the product instructions. If moisture appears inside the building, do not assume the new surface is the only possible cause. Document the timing and conditions and arrange an appropriate assessment. A clear record helps distinguish an external drainage concern from a defect elsewhere in the building.
Can I simply raise paving to the same height as the inside floor?
That needs a properly coordinated detail. Discuss moisture protection, drainage, ventilation and access with the relevant professional before choosing the finished level.
Your project checklist
- Record existing building details.
- Measure falls and contributing surfaces.
- Coordinate access with moisture protection.
- Keep the collection point and outlet maintainable.
