What affects dropped-kerb cost, and what happens at handover?
Look beyond the number of kerbs when comparing a crossover quotation.
Understand what is being priced
A vehicle crossover involves the pavement or verge construction as well as the kerb line. Ask which excavation, disposal, kerbs, surfacing and reinstatement are included. A short description such as “drop six kerbs” may not tell you enough to compare it with another proposal. The quotation should relate to the actual approved scope and conditions.
Separate authority charges from construction
Application-related charges and the contractor's construction price are different items. Establish who pays each charge and whether anything is included within the quoted total. Refer to the current authority fee information rather than an old price copied from a website. If an item is paid separately, include it in your own overall project budget.
Identify site-specific extras
The area, existing construction, access arrangements and affected services can change the scope. Ask what is known and what still requires confirmation. Keep private driveway work separate unless it is expressly included. A price for the crossover alone should not be compared directly with a combined driveway and entrance package.
Agree changes before they become disputes
Unexpected findings should lead to a discussion about the required response, cost and programme. Ask how that will be documented. If a contractor proposes a change, check whether the approved arrangement is affected as well as the price. Retain the agreed revision with the original quotation so the final account can be understood.
Review the completed work
Walk through the finished arrangement from a safe position and ask about the surface transitions, reinstatement and when the access may be used. Note any visible matters that need attention and agree how they will be addressed. This review is useful but does not replace any authority process or technical checks that apply to the work.
Retain the right records
Ask the contractor to confirm the applicable completion notification and licence records. East Sussex's process page currently describes sign-off within its licence system; do not assume a separate completion certificate will always be issued. Keep the records, invoice, photographs and aftercare together. They help if a question arises later or you plan a further change to the frontage.
Why can two apparently similar entrances have different prices?
The visible width is only part of the work. Preparation, surrounding construction, authority conditions and any affected apparatus can differ. Compare the scope and assumptions rather than treating the number of kerbs as a complete specification.
