Footings and concrete bases: questions before work starts
Understand the purpose, design responsibility and handover information.
Define what the concrete supports
A shed base, a wall footing and a structural foundation are not interchangeable. Explain the proposed structure, dimensions and use, and share the manufacturer’s drawings where relevant. A contractor needs this information before agreeing what will be built. Avoid choosing a depth or thickness from an unrelated online example.
Confirm who specifies the work
Ask who is responsible for the design and whether an engineer or building control input is needed. Ground conditions, nearby structures and services can affect the proposal. The quotation should distinguish between work to an existing design and any design or investigation that still needs to be arranged.
Coordinate levels and connections
Discuss the finished level, access, drainage and any service routes before concrete is placed. If the base supports a supplied building, check the supplier’s requirements and tolerances. Agree how inspection requirements will be accommodated and how unexpected ground conditions will be handled before they disrupt the programme.
Keep the construction record
Ask for relevant drawings, photographs and delivery information to be retained. Confirm curing protection and when the next stage can proceed; readiness should follow the specification and conditions rather than a guessed number of days. At handover, check the agreed dimensions and interfaces and record any matters that need resolution.
