New turf: preparation and aftercare
Give a new lawn a better start with planned preparation and realistic care.
Decide what the lawn must do
A lawn used by children and pets has different priorities from a lightly used ornamental patch. Explain the expected wear, shade and time you have for mowing. Identify areas that remain wet or become compacted. New turf covers the surface quickly, but it does not remove the causes of an unsuitable growing environment.
Prepare before delivery
Soil preparation and finished levels should be settled before turf arrives. Discuss existing weeds, rubble, compaction and how the lawn meets patios and beds. Turf is a living product and should not be left rolled up while other construction catches up. Agree who will be available to water and care for it immediately after installation.
Help the roots establish
New turf needs moisture while it roots into the soil beneath. Check the turf and soil rather than assuming a brief shower has watered everything. Follow the supplier’s advice and any local water restrictions. Keep unnecessary traffic off the new lawn and avoid using it as a shortcut while surrounding work is completed.
Move into normal lawn care
Ask the installer when it is sufficiently rooted for its first cut and how to set up the mower. The answer depends on establishment, not simply a fixed date in the diary. Photograph persistent patches and discuss them promptly. Once established, adjust care to the season and actual lawn conditions instead of continuing a new-turf watering routine indefinitely.
