Bedding sand, kiln-dried sand and jointing compounds
Why the material underneath paving is different from the material between the units.
Separate bedding from jointing
The bedding layer supports the paving units; the joints fill the spaces between them. They have different roles and are not necessarily made from the same material. A bag described simply as sand is not enough information to identify either. Ask for the bedding and jointing specification separately, particularly when comparing conventional block paving with a permeable system.
Conventional block-paving joints
Fine kiln-dried jointing sand is used with suitable conventional block-paving systems. The grading and dry condition help it enter the joints. Properly filled joints contribute to the intended behaviour of the paved surface. The supplier's instructions should govern installation and later replenishment. Do not assume a different sand will perform identically just because it looks similar in the bag.
Permeable joints need to pass water
Some permeable block systems use a specified small aggregate in the joints and a compatible open-graded bedding layer. Substituting ordinary jointing sand can interfere with the designed water route. Ask which jointing product belongs with the selected paving. The finished colour is a secondary consideration to compatibility and the performance required of the system.
Patio compounds are product-specific
Resin-based compounds, cementitious grouts and other patio jointing products have their own requirements. These can include suitable paving, joint geometry, supporting construction and application conditions. Read the instructions for the exact product. A compound suitable for one patio arrangement may not be the right choice for another, even if both surfaces use a similar-looking stone.
Cleaning can affect the joints
Aggressive cleaning may remove or damage joint material. Ask how the completed surface should be cleaned and what maintenance the joints need. If material is repeatedly disappearing, investigate the cause instead of continually refilling it. Movement, drainage or an incompatible installation can require attention beyond the visible joint surface.
Keep a small product record
Record the paving range, jointing product and colour. This makes future maintenance or a local repair easier to discuss. Before accepting a quotation, ask whether jointing is included and whether the method matches the paving manufacturer's guidance. A sample can help with appearance, but it should not replace confirmation that the product suits the actual construction.
Can I just use cement to fill any paving joint?
No. Different paving systems need different jointing arrangements. An improvised rigid fill can be inappropriate where the pavement is designed to behave differently. Follow the system guidance.
