Why does porcelain paving need primer?
Understand the role of primer or bonding slurry in porcelain paving and how the bond between a slab and its bedding contributes to a secure installation.
Understand what the primer is doing
In a mortar-bedded porcelain installation, a suitable bonding primer helps connect the slab underside to the bed. It is one part of the system, not a substitute for a sound base or suitable bedding. Different proprietary methods may have different requirements, so identify the intended system first.
Marshalls' porcelain guidance includes priming the reverse of each slab before bedding. The relevant instructions for the actual slab, primer and bedding combination should determine the installation details.
Check compatibility before work starts
Ask which primer will be used and why it suits the paving and bedding. Retain the product name and application instructions with the project records. Generic references to glue or slurry are less useful than knowing the specified product.
A bonding product should not be confused with a surface sealer. One works at the interface beneath the slab; the other, where appropriate, treats the visible surface. Buying one does not replace the other, and porcelain does not automatically need a top-surface treatment.
Preparation and timing matter
The substrate and slab underside should be in the condition required by the chosen product. Contamination, unsuitable weather or working outside its application time can compromise a carefully selected system. Agree how the installer will protect finished faces from residue during laying.
Coverage and timing need to follow the instructions. Avoid assuming that a more concentrated mix, a thicker layer or adding another product improves the bond. Compatibility across the system is more important than improvising a stronger-looking mixture.
If porcelain has already become loose
A loose slab does not prove primer was omitted. The bed, support and preparation need checking as well. A lifted unit can help reveal where separation occurred, but the repair decision should consider the surrounding area and installation history.
Ask for a repair that restores the specified support and bond while preserving levels and joints. Avoid treating the visible gap alone. Record the products and curing advice for the repaired area so later cleaning or early use does not undermine the work.
Common questions
Can primer fix an unstable base?
No. It addresses the bond within a compatible system. Movement or weakness beneath the bedding requires its own remedy.
Do all porcelain installations use mortar and primer?
No. There are other designed systems. Follow the full specification for the selected method rather than combining unrelated details.
