Resin bound or resin bonded: what are you buying?
Understand the finish, base and drainage before choosing a resin driveway.
Two different finishes
Resin bound surfacing combines aggregate with resin before it is laid. Resin bonded surfacing uses aggregate scattered onto a resin-coated surface. They are different systems, so a quotation that only says “resin driveway” leaves important questions unanswered. Ask for the product, intended use and full construction build-up, not just a colour swatch.
Look below the surface
An attractive top layer cannot make an unstable base sound. Before an overlay is proposed, the existing surface needs assessment for movement, cracking, levels and drainage. Ask what repairs or replacement are included and how the edges, covers and thresholds will be finished. A cheaper overlay and a complete reconstruction are not equivalent quotations.
Check the route for rainwater
Resin bound material can be permeable, but the complete driveway must have a suitable route for water. A permeable wearing course over an impermeable base does not automatically create an infiltration system. Ask how the base and drainage work together at your property. Product claims should relate to the actual system being installed.
Agree the finish and handover
View a physical sample outdoors and discuss aggregate size, edging and transitions to paths. Ask whether the chosen resin is UV stable and what maintenance the supplier specifies. At handover, obtain instructions for first use, cleaning and dealing with spills. MPH is resin-bound trained; we can discuss the proposed finish and preparation as part of your quotation.
