Make a quick walk-round routine
Walk the driveway occasionally and look at more than the centre. Check the entrance, edges, channels, manhole surrounds and regular wheel positions. These areas often show changes before a problem becomes obvious across the whole surface.
Keep a few dated photographs. They give you a reliable comparison if you later notice a dip or crack. Record any unusual loading or nearby work, because that can help explain when and why a defect developed.
Match care to the surface
For conventional block paving, check that joints remain appropriately filled and edges stay secure. Permeable paving needs its specified joint material and a maintenance approach that protects water movement. Do not substitute whatever sand happens to be available.
For resin, tarmac or concrete, follow the system's cleaning and aftercare instructions. Look for opening cracks, local wear and changes around repairs. If the surface has a sealer, record the product and date so later treatment can be checked for compatibility.
Keep drainage and boundaries clear
Remove leaves and soil before they build up in channels or at low points. Trim encroaching planting where appropriate and prevent loose garden material spilling across the paving. Check that drainage covers remain accessible rather than hidden beneath pots or stored items.
Watch how rainfall leaves the surface. A driveway that suddenly drains differently deserves attention even if it still looks attractive when dry. Cleaning the outlet may solve a blockage, while persistent ponding can point to levels or settlement that need closer assessment.
Decide what needs professional attention
Ask for an inspection if movement continues, joints open repeatedly, a drain appears damaged or the driveway no longer supports normal use comfortably. Describe the symptoms and history rather than ordering a particular repair before the cause is known.
Keep quotations and aftercare paperwork with your maintenance record. If a guarantee applies, contact the relevant installer before carrying out work that could affect it. The aim is to preserve the sound parts of the driveway and deal with developing faults proportionately, rather than repeatedly paying for surface improvements that leave the underlying problem untouched.
