Spring: assess the winter's effects
Once conditions improve, inspect the whole driveway in daylight. Look for blocked channels, loose joint fill, new cracks and edges that have moved. Compare anything suspicious with older photographs before deciding whether it is changing.
Sweep away debris and clean using a method suitable for the surface. Deal with small maintenance tasks before arranging cosmetic treatments. A clean, dry inspection is a useful opportunity to notice damage that winter leaves or standing water concealed.
Summer: manage spills and concentrated loads
Attend to oil and other spills promptly with a compatible method. Avoid moving a problem across the driveway by hosing it towards a drain. During building or garden work, discuss protection for skips, deliveries and equipment with the supplier and installer.
Be mindful of stationary steering and concentrated loads on susceptible surfaces, especially in warm conditions. Follow the particular surfacing instructions rather than assuming all driveways behave alike. If a repair is needed, arrange it with suitable weather and curing time in mind.
Autumn: keep water routes open
Leaves break down into material that can collect in joints and drains. Regular sweeping is especially worthwhile under trees and beside planting beds. Clear accessible channel gratings carefully and check that water reaches the intended outlet.
Inspect during or just after rain from a safe position. Note new ponding, overflow at the entrance or water collecting against a threshold. A seasonal blockage and an incorrect surface fall require different responses, so record what happens before the area dries.
Winter: protect the surface and inspect sensibly
Use winter care products only where they are suitable for your paving and its jointing or sealer. Choose tools that will not gouge the finish, and avoid forcefully chipping ice from vulnerable edges. Keep access routes clear without pushing piles of debris into drainage channels.
After severe weather, look again for lifting, cracking or loose units. Postpone surface treatments that require warmer or drier conditions. Keep a short maintenance record with dates, photographs and product names; it makes future advice more accurate and avoids incompatible treatments being applied on top of one another.

Do I need a fixed monthly cleaning schedule?
Not necessarily. The right frequency depends on shade, trees, use and the surface. Regular observation is more useful than unnecessary aggressive washing.
Should I repair every mark immediately?
Fresh contamination and trip hazards deserve prompt attention. Stable cosmetic marks can be assessed before treatment so the remedy does not cause more damage.
