Resin-bound aggregate, binder and colour choices
Understand the components behind the appearance of a resin-bound surface.
Choose a system, not just a colour
A resin-bound surface combines aggregate and binder under a specified system. The aggregate blend, binder, base and installation requirements belong together. Start with the intended use—such as a driveway, path or patio—then discuss the suitable options. A colour chart alone does not describe the construction you are buying.
Aggregate size and blend affect the finish
Different aggregate selections change the texture and appearance of the surface. Ask for a representative sample of the actual blend and view it outside in both shade and daylight. Natural material can vary, so discuss the expected range rather than expecting every stone to match a screen image. The selected grading must remain suitable for the specified system.
Binder selection needs clarity
Ask which binder is proposed and whether UV stability is part of its specification. Product selection affects the appearance and application requirements. A cheaper unnamed resin should not be substituted without checking suitability. Keep the product information with the quotation so a reference to resin-bound surfacing means the same thing to both parties.
Installation conditions are part of quality
Aggregate condition, mixing and application requirements must follow the chosen system. Moisture, temperature and weather can affect what work is appropriate. Ask how unsuitable conditions will be handled rather than insisting the finish be laid on a fixed date regardless of the forecast. A good programme allows the technical requirements to govern the installation.
The base determines more than flatness
The supporting construction needs to be suitable for the intended loads, surface and drainage design. An attractive new layer does not repair movement beneath it. Ask whether an existing base is being retained, how it will be assessed and what repairs are included. Permeability also needs to be considered across the complete construction and its discharge route.
Approve a useful handover record
Keep the aggregate blend, binder details and aftercare instructions. Ask when the surface can be used and which cleaning methods are appropriate. If a future repair is needed, the product record helps the discussion, although a perfect visual match cannot be assumed. Can any dry decorative gravel be mixed with resin?
No. The aggregate must meet the selected system's requirements. Do not assume that a visually similar stone is a suitable replacement for the specified blend.
